Marinette umpire was mound ace during Wishigan League career

Marinette's Al Mathy, an umpire for 32 years, worked his first state high school baseball tournament at Appleton's Fox Cities Stadium.

"He knows the game of baseball because he played it," former Marinette Redbirds manager John LaCourt told The EagleHerald.

Mathy stood out on the mound during his Wishigan League career, and on occasion was able to retire the likes of Todder Lindeman and John Benzie.

"He was a very good pitcher," LaCourt said. "He always kept the ball down in the zone and he threw strikes." ...

Next week's West Iron County football camp features some top-notch coaches. On the list is Iron Mountain's Mark Fredy, who has developed a stellar program at Tigerton (Wis.) High School ...

Understand Austin had a blast helping out the former Central Florida University star.
