Rewarding stupidity

July 19, 2013
The Daily News

EDITOR:

I can't speak for all the Bible-thumping, gun-toting, freedom lovers out there, but I have few things to say about over-regulation.

A very, large amount of the regulations that are on the books are designed to protect people from their own stupidity.

We, the people could shrink the government, and do plenty of favors for ourselves, our pocket books, the economy, and especially the children.

A great place to start would be to start would be to eliminate almost every publicly funded, safety education program. Every time another one of these programs gets added to the mix, somebody has to fund it. As we all know, the people that create the jobs are going to catch the brunt of it. Their taxes will be hiked, and the cost of everything else will go up, too.

When you stick it to man, everyone gets the shaft.

For the most part, getting rid of litigation would be a great thing. Rewarding people for doing stupid things has gotten out of control. Did you slip on somebody's sidewalk? Did you flip an ATV because you were doing something really stupid with it?

Did you receive any nasty burns because you held a cup of hot coffee between your legs? Guess what? You can sue somebody and get an astronomical settlement because you were not paying attention to your surroundings, doing something stupid, and so on.

Do you know what this does? It raises costs because now someone is going to be forced to do something different with their product. That costs money, which ultimately gets passed down to the consumer. Personal accountability would work much better for our nation.

Last, but not least, remove the warning labels from everything. For example, if somebody is not able to figure out that using a blow dryer, while taking a shower, is not good for one's health, they deserve to reap the consequences for their action. Do you understand where I am going with that?

If somebody does not want to wear a helmet, seat belt, or whatever else comes to mind, that should be their own choice.

I do not care if you use protective equipment or not because you are an adult, so you are old enough to make your own choices. Anything that happens as a result of your choices should be your own responsibility.

As long as humans continue to roam the earth, stupidity will continue to exist.

Nobody is responsible for your safety. You all have to take care of yourselves. When people do stupid things, stop rewarding them for it.

Government is not going to be able to protect them, anyway, so we might as well just them do themselves in. There will be innocent bystanders that get hurt. I get that, but government intervention is not saving any of them, anyway. You cannot rely on anyone else to protect you. You are ultimately responsible for your own well-being.

When you stop rewarding people for doing stupid things, you will even be able to create a lot of shovel-ready jobs, in the process. Who can argue with that?
