Wave 96 wins Appleton Shootout soccer tourney

APPLETON, Wis. - Wave 96 Select girls soccer team, a travel team including players from Iron Mountain and Kingsford, won all four games to claim the Appleton Summer Shootout title.

In the opening game, Wave defeated Dakota Rev Tempest (Minn.) 3-0. Scoring for the winners were Makaela Burse (2) and Alex Cording with assists recorded by Courtney Qualley, Carleigh Hillier and Makaela Burse.

Keeper Molly Gaudreau made three saves for the Wave. Wave defenders Alley Hillier, Stina Jackson, Sydney Higgins, Amber Huebner, Kelsey Bennett and Kristen Gendron preserved the shutout with outstanding defensive play.

In game 2, Wave hung on a 2-0 shutout on Everton FC, fifth-ranked team in the state. Casey Durand and Burse scored goals, with assists from Sierra Lancour and Durand. Keeper Qualley made four saves for a second shutout resulting in the Wave winning their bracket in pool play.

In the semifinal, Wave overcame a 1-0 first-half deficit with critical adjustments made by coach Steve Ross resulting in five unanswered goals in a 5-1 victory over the Howard Hurricanes.

Goals were scored by Shelby Ross, Lizzy Slagle, Qualley and Burse (2), with assists by Shayla Huebner, Santina Bianco, Burse and Qualley. Keepers Qualley and Gaudreau combined for three saves.

In the championship, Wave defeated Keliix (ranked No. 7 in Minn.) 2-1 in a shootout.

Alex Cording scored four minutes into the game with an assist from Burse. The Wave then held Keliix scoreless until 40 seconds remained in the game, when Keliix scored on a direct kick forcing a shootout. The Wave won the shootout 3-2 with excellent saves made by keeper Gaudreau and scores by Higgins, Carleigh Hillier and Cording.

Coaches for the Wave 96 Select girls are Steve Ross and Troy Cording.

The next event for the Wave is the USA Cup in Blaine, Minn., an international showcase that typically attracts 1000 teams.
