NORWAY - Norway's Little League Junior all-stars exploded for eight runs in the first inning and opened sectional play with a convincing 14-5 victory over Portage Lake Friday evening at Marion Park.
Norway advances to this morning's winner's bracket game against Petoskey. Game time is 10 a.m.
"It was a good, solid team effort here tonight," Norway manager Jim Bal said.
Dane VanDenHeuvel took the bump for Norway, working into the sixth before being relieved by Bryce Broden. Norway pitching allowed just four hits and one earned run in the game. They struck out four.
Nick Murvich led Norway's bats with a 5-for-5 day at the plate. He hit two singles in the first inning and also later added a double.
VanDenHeuvel had three hits with a two-run double in the first. Hunter Kaldor hit a RBI-double in the first and later added a single, as Norway racked up 13 hits against seven different Portage Lake hurlers.
Broden and Bobby Kleiman also notched RBIs in the first for Norway, both with singles.
Norway added two more runs in the second, one in the third, two in the sixth and one more in the seventh.
The winner of this morning's contest advances to Sunday's final, set for noon. Portage Lake and the loser of this morning's game face off in an elimination game at 2 p.m. this afternoon.
