The Daily News

ISHPEMING - Iron Mountain North, victimized by four home runs, fell to Grosse Pointe Woods Shores 12-1 in a Little League major (age 12-under) baseball state tournament opener Friday.

Shores socked two home runs in a five-run third inning.

North collected three singles in the game from Foster Wonders, Caleb Johnson and Tyler Beauchamp.

North continues round robin play this weekend, meeting Taylor Northwest today and Traverse City East on Sunday. Both games begin at 9 a.m. (Central time).

Top two teams from each pool advance to state quarterfinal play Monday.

Portage Lake from the Houghton area dropped a 3-2, seven-inning, decision to Edwardsburg in pool play Friday and likely needs to win its next two games to qualify for quarterfinal action.

"You expect the kids to be down, but we'll be ready to play Midland Northeast (today)," PL manager John Bostwick said. "The kids don't give up. If they did, we wouldn't be here."
