MENOMINEE - Norway's Justin Anderson won the age 15-16 division in the 2013 U.P. Golf Association Junior Championships at Riverside Golf Club.
Anderson carded an 84 to edge Mike Schmidt of Little River, 85, for division honors.
Austin Hansen, also representing Oak Crest Golf Course in Norway, shot an 89 to tie for fifth in the age 15-16 division.
Three golfers from Hermansville's Wild Pines Golf Course placed in their age groups. Bryson Mercier fired a 52 over nine holes for age 9-10 boys honors; Katy Combs placed second in girls age 13-14, and Judy Combs wound up runner-up in girls age 9-10.
Anderson qualified for the Michigan Junior Golf Association (MJGA) state tournament Wednesday, Aug. 21, at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Ypsilanti. Anderson finished third overall, with the top six from the U.P. going to state.
"A number of Michigan's best junior boy players have gone on to play at the elite professional level," said Richard Loring, a founder and MJGA executive director. "This is truly amazing for a state that has a five-month life span for golfers."
The championship consists of 64 players competing in 36 holes of tournament play.
