MARQUETTE -- The National Weather Service in Marquette has issued a tornado warning for northern Menominee county until 7:45 p.m. and a severe thunderstorm warning for Central and Western Upper Peninsula including Dickinson and Iron counties until 1 a.m. Friday.
The tornado warning is in effect for the areas of Meyer, Powers, Spalding and Wilson. At 6:53 p.m., a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located five miles north of Powers and moving southeast at 40 miles per hour. NWS officials added that the radar showed a strong rotation in the tornado with damaging winds and quarter size hail.
Lightening and heavy rains are expected with the severe thunderstorm warning, which is in effect for nine counties -- Baraga, Delta, Dickinson, Iron, Marquette, and Menominee in the Central Upper Peninsula and in the western end for the counties of Gogebic, Houghton and Ontonagon.
