Bob Tasca, with Kingsford grads part of his funny car drag racing team, earned runner-up at the Mile-High NHRA Nationals in Denver.

Ryan O'Dette and Andy Mattord, who also show credentials from the Dickinson-Iron Tech Center and University of Northwestern Ohio, serve as mechanics.

Tasca's drag racer topped 257 mph in finishing second to Cruz Pedregon. Top 10 teams from the NHRA Mello Yello Series point standings advance to the playoffs. Tasca is 10th heading to this week's Sonoma (Calif.) Nationals.

"It just proves we're playing hardball out there," Tasca said. "The points are so close and you have great cars close to the cut. We were going rounds, but everybody ahead of us was going rounds too. It was one of those weekends where you couldn't blink.

"We're poised to make a real run, to move way up the ladder these next couple of races. That's what our goal is."
