LP Sagola honored for safety

SAGOLA The Engineered Wood Association has named the Louisiana-Pacific Corp. oriented strand board mill in Sagola first place in its 2012 Safety Improvement for mills that worked fewer than 400,000 hours.

Steve Zylkowski, director of quality services at Engineered Wood Association, presented the award to Louisiana-Pacific Sagola employees.

The Engineered Wood Association Safety and Health Awards Program is the premier safety award program for the engineered wood industry in North America.

The Louisiana-Pacific Corp. oriented strand board mill in Sagola has been honored for its safety record. It encourages and recognizes operational excellence with the goal of reducing injury and illness rates. The awards are based on data collected from member and non-member mills.

LP Sagola was recognized for a 100 percent improvement in its safety record.

The mill's total incident rate (TIR) went from 1.30 in 2010 to 0.65 in 2011 and 0 in 2012.

LP Sagola was also named to the Engineered Wood Association's 2012 Incident Free Honor Society for having no injuries in 2012.

"This award is the result of a lot of hard work and intense focus from our employees," LP Sagola Plant Manager Todd Maki "Safety is a core value with our company and awards like this are a testament to every employee's efforts in making LP a safe place to work."

LP Sagola has worked more than 500,000 hours without an OSHA recordable injury.

In addition, Engineered Wood Association named LP the 2012 Safest Company in the building products industry.

This was the fourth time in five years that LP has won that honor.

In all, LP won seven of the Engineered Wood Association's 13 safety award categories and was recognized for having 12 of the 17 facilities named to Engineered Wood Association's 2012 Incident Free Honor Society.
