Wykons tip Ironwood

IRON RIVER - West Iron County dropped the No. 1 singles and doubles matches to Ironwood but took the rest in a 6-2 girls tennis decision Monday at the Nelson Field Courts.

"The girls played well again today in the heat," said WIC Denise Spelgatti said.

In the No. 1 matches, Ironwood's Katie Piispinen spilled Haley Anderson 6-2, 6-1 and the Red Devils top doubles of Rachel Pallin and Payton Aho won on default over Sydnie Mazurek and Meg Miatech.

"Haley Anderson is playing well in every match and will continue to improve," Spelgatti said. "It's very hard to play the top players in the U.P. especially when many of them have played that position for more than one year. I am so proud of her.

"Meg Miatech and Sydnie Mazureki were both playing hurt today and ended up having to default. Hopefully they will both be back to form soon."

The Wykons (3-2) host Marquette on Tuesday and Escanaba on Wednesday, and visit Iron Mountain on Friday.

"The rest of the week will be tough," Spelgatti said.

The Wykons coach also cited junior varsity players Molly Sheehan-Hannah Swanson, Sydney Schram-Alle Schive and Michelle Weigand for winning matches, and Madi McNamara/Keeley Nolingberg for "a good match against their opponents."
