Florence’s Emma Baumgart sends down one of her 15 kills in Thursday’s Northern Lakes Conference match with Phelps. Aly Young (22), who added 12 kills, follows the play.
Bobcats coach Trudy Rochon was pleased with the team's movement, back row coverage, serving and passing.
"It was way better than it has been," Rochon said after the home opener. "The girls hit the ball really well and moved it around.
"Phelps has a real nice scrappy hitting team. It wasn't that it was easy to get that good pass."
Florence made it tough on Phelps with seniors Emma Baumgart (15), Aly Young (12) and southpaw Erin Walker (eight) cranking out 35 kills.
"They all contributed well," Rochon said. "You get the pass up, the setter gets the ball on the net and they can do some damage."
Baumgart tallied 12 spike kills along with one tip and two blocks. When asked about Baumgart's development, Rochon cited Karen Harrison's strength and conditioning class.
"Maybe I should make my whole team take that class," Rochon said with a chuckle.
Baumgart produced three straight points when the Bobcats took over the second game. Walker closed it out with a save and spiker.
Florence (2-1 NLC) competes in Auburndale on Saturday and returns to Northern Lakes Conference play on Tuesday against Goodman-Pembine.
"Goodman-Pembine could be fighting (for the league title)," Rochon said.
Florence's junior varsity defeated Kingsford's freshmen 2-1 (25-17, 25-9, 22-25). Gina Gehlhoff, Brier Winney and Cassie Dumke served 100 percent.
Varsity summary follows:
Emma Baumgart - 15 kills, 3 aces, 100 percent serving; Keaghan Doda - 13 assists, 1 dig, 3 aces; Erin Walker - 8 kills, 1 dig; Aubree Dumke - 2 digs; Jessica Glime - 1 kill, 1 dig, 1 ace, 100 percent serving; Aly Young - 13 kills, 13 assists, 1 dig, 100 percent serving; Kristen Schroeder - 1 kill, 2 aces; Rhianon Franklin - 1 kill.
