My favorite newspaper owner credited for Pirates' turnaround

Pittsburgh Pirates owner Bob Nutting drew praise from Sports Illustrated for the team posting its first winning season since 1992.

Sports Illustrated credited Nutting for revamping the team academy in the Dominican Republic and minor league headquarters in Bradenton, Fla.

"It's no coincidence that they look almost identical, part of the plan to ease Latin players into an American program," SI's Lee Jenkins wrote.

ESPN The Magazine recently featured the Pirates, with Nutting calling last year's collapse "an epic disappointment." Pittsburgh closed out 2012 with a 17-37 record.

Nutting, who bought the Pirates in 2007, also owns this newspaper. Just another reason to hope for a Pirates-Tigers World Series ...

Kingsford High School grads Amy Janeshek and Jake Meeuwsen battled for the title Saturday in the Iron Mountain Road & Trail Half Marathon.

Janeshek, who has a wealth of distance running experience, posted a time of 1 hour, 26 minutes, 2 seconds. Runner-up Meeuwsen, a Flivver distance running standout, held the early lead and finished in 1:26.55.

"Jake's a got a gift for running," the gracious Amy said via Facebook. "He has a real easy stride and is light on his feet."

Amy also appreciated Jake referring to her as a "young lady."

Carrie (LeDuc) Meeuwsen, Jake's mother, completed the course in 2:02.59 ...

Iron Mountain expects a good turnout for the 20th reunion of the 1993 state championship football team.

Tom Wender, head coach of those Mountaineers, figures "roughly 30 of the 35" players will attend the homecoming game with Westwood on Sept. 27 ...
