Hold off Florence for tournament crown

CRYSTAL FALLS - The host Trojans turned back Florence, Wis., 2-0 (21-11, 23-21) to capture another Forest Park Invitational volleyball championship Saturday.

"We fought back strong in the second game," Bobcats coach Trudy Rochon said. "Forest Park has a great team and runs a very nice tournament. I am super proud of my girls."

The defending champion Lady Trojans downed Stephenson 2-0 (21-12, 22-20) in the semifinals.

"We were up and down all day," Forest Park coach Kim Bjork said. "We had some good moments where we played aggressively and some moments where we faltered.

When we were communicating and moving as a team, we did great. Overall it was good to see the girls step up their level of play. We have a great group of talent we just need to keep pushing to get better."

The Bobcats advanced to the finals with a 2-0 (21-14, 21-17) decision over North Dickinson.

Forest Park (16-5-1, 5-0 Skyline) topped pool two with a 7-1 record, dropping one game to North Dickinson. The Nordics wound up 6-2, followed by Lake Linden, 3-5; L'Anse, 2-6, and Munising, 2-6.

Florence posted a perfect 8-0 mark in pool one. Stephenson, 5-3; West Iron County, 4-4; Iron Mountain, 2-6, and Watersmeet, 1-7, also participated.

Florence's closest pool play test was a 21-18 decision over Stephenson.

"We went undefeated in pool play playing very nice volleyball," Rochon said.

Florence's Emma Baumgart tallied 47 kills and Aly Young had 37. Young also contributed 28 assists and Keaghan Doda had 25.

Flivv JVs, frosh at Ishpeming: Kingsford posted a perfect 8-0 pool play record in the 14-team Ishpeming Invitational junior varsity volleyball tournament.

The top-seeded Flivvers bowed to Menominee 25-22 in a one-game playoff.

For the day, Ali Gering notched 27 kills and Madison Bethke had 12 kills. Mariah Clement, Shaylee Myers, Hailey Bourgeois, Sierra Fortner, and Ainsley Alfaro led the Flivvers in serving while Hannah Carlson and Savannah Martin stood out setting.

Kingsford registered a 3-5 record in the freshmen portion of the tournament.

Sabrina Wickman, Gabby Nordstrom, Danielle Cournaya and Abby Tomasoski paced the hitting; Makayla Michaud, Amber Henderson, Sydney Wickman and Tori Dalsonta topped the servers, and Abbey Person, Nicci Hofer and Olivia Sexton played wekll on the back row.

Bobcats:

Florence change: Florence and White Lake will not play a junior varsity volleyball match Tuesday.

Bobcats' varsity match will start at 5:30 p.m. at White Lake.
