IRON RIVER - Over the past year, West Iron County Schools has been renovating the strength training facility located in the mezzanine overlooking the Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.
School officials said that the facility renovation will provide more opportunities for both students in physical education classes and student-athletes to train to live a healthy lifestyle and improve athletic performance through guided instruction.
As of this month, stage one of the renovation has been completed. Stage one consisted of transforming the mezzanine behind the bleachers into a free weight area.
The first phase of West Iron County Schools’ fitness center project, which includes a room of free weights, has been completed.
Connor Sports Flooring worked with the school to provide a fitness center flooring to cover the pre-existing concrete. In addition, eight Hammer Strength HD Elite half racks were purchased that will be used for many free weight exercises targeting all major muscle groups. To finish the stage, bumper plates have been added to the racks for full-body explosive type exercises.
With the addition of this equipment, 24 to 32 individuals can comfortably perform a workout in this area alone.
Officials said that although stage one has improved the fitness center dramatically, stage two is designed to provide even more opportunities for the students and student-athletes to perform various exercises.
The old weight room next to the mezzanine will be transformed into a selectorized machine area, which will also include a dumbbell area.
Officials said that this is a work in progress, and will be completed as soon as time and funds allow.
Fundraisers have been ongoing throughout the year.
Currently, the Wykon Athletic Booster Club has partnered with those organizing the renovation to sell tickets for a shotgun/rifle drawing that will end at Homecoming on Saturday.
On Oct. 22, there will be an open house of the fitness center during the volleyball game from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
