MARQUETTE - The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for western and north central Upper Peninsula.

The advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. today until 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Early season snow is expected tonight into Tuesday morning.

"As a low pressure system over eastern Lake Superior gradually lifts to the northeast today and tonight, moisture associated with the low, combined with the colder air moving into the northern Great Lakes, will produce lake enhanced snow showers," Weather Service officials said.

"Expect westerly winds this afternoon to shift to the northwest and north tonight bringing widespread snow showers into west and north central Upper Michigan," the Weather Service said.

Cities in the affected area include Ontonagon, Houghton, Baraga, Hancock, L`Anse, Marquette, Gwinn and Ironwood.

Scattered snow showers are expected late this afternoon mainly from Ontonagon to Twin Lakes and Pelkie, and will become more widespread tonight.

Look for snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches of wet snow with the greatest amounts in the higher terrain, officials said.
