Flivvers, Mountaineers post JV football wins

GLADSTONE - Kingsford raced to a 34-0 first-half lead and rolled to a 48-7 Great Northern Conference junior varsity football victory over Gladstone.

Coach Mark Novara's unbeaten Flivvers (8-0 overall, 3-0 GNC) end their season Thursday by traveling to Escanaba. Kick-off is 5:30 p.m.

Sam Santi and Cole Moreau each scored 12 points for the Flivvs, with Santi going nine yards twice for touchdowns and Moreau racing 52 yards for a TD and adding six extra points.

Moreau topped the Flivvers' 255 rushing yards with 95 yards in five attempts. Alex Blaskowski scored from a yard out in the first quarter and tacked on 45 yards in four carries. Blaskowski also helped set up the opening TD with a 49-yard kick off return.

Brett Swanson picked off a Gladstone pass and returned the pigskin 48 yards for a Kingsford TD, then capped off a big defensive game with a second interception latter in the contest.

Ben Moreau returned a third quarter kick off 81 yards for a touchdown while Austin Taylor-Smith went two yards for the Flivvers final score.

Kingsford picked up 20 first downs and had 467 yards of total offense.

Several Flivvers joined Swanson with big defensive games. Nick Smith, Wyatt Caylor and Kyle Henes recovered fumbles while Kyle Eckerberg caused one fumble then ripped another ball away from a Brave runner and rambled 25 yards.

T.J. Haag, Blaskowski, Eckerberg and Swanson topped the tackle chart.

IM 20, Escanaba 18 - Jacob Stoner's end zone interception late in the game helped Iron Mountain preserve a 20-18 victory over Escanaba.

Jake Lefebrve scored two touchdowns on runs of five and one yards. Josh Tucker scored a TD on a 66- yard run. Tucker also caught a two-point conversion pass from Tanner Huotari. Tucker finished with 92 yards on nine rushes.

Carson Wonders caught four passes for 75 yards.

The defense was lead in tackles by Nick Lusaurdi, Tucker, Carson Wonders, Gavin Wright, Kyle Johnson and Stoner.

IM plays at Norway Thursday.

Menominee 41, North Dickinson 6 - Gavin Johnson's 43-yard pass interception return for a touchdown accounted for the only Nordic points in the junior varsity football game.

North Dickinson quarterback Garrett O'Neil threw for 158 yards. Kory Williams led the Nordic defense with 12 tackles.

North Dickinson's junior varsity completes the season Thursday, taking on Gladstone's freshmen in Gladstone at 6 p.m. (Central).
