Iron Mountain business owner Alan Arcand announces his candidacy for Michigan’s First Congressional District to a group of supporters outside the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital on Monday. Arcand, a Republican, will be challenging incumbent Dan Benishek, R-Crystal Falls, in the August primary election.
Arcand made the official announcement to a group of about 30 supporters outside the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital on Monday.
As a Republican, he will be challenging incumbent Dan Benishek, R-Crystal Falls, in the August primary election.
Arcand, who is an Iron County resident, owns and operates Arcand's Service Center on the north side of Iron Mountain. He is a United States Air Force veteran, having served from 2000 to 2009.
In his candidacy speech, Arcand emphasized that he stands for smaller government.
"Our Founding Fathers vehemently feared an oppressive government interfering with every aspect of our lives, which is why they deliberately gave the balance of power to the people and the states," he said.
Arcand felt that the Founding Fathers would be opposed to new healthcare laws, to the National Security Agency spying on citizens, and to the nation's dependence on foreign oil.
"We have forgotten what liberty is, how you get it and how you keep it," he said. "Ronald Reagan knew what it was when he said that government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem."
"We need leaders with guts to fight for our liberties and a better way of life for our children," he added.
This campaign will be Arcand's first time running for a political office. However, he does have leadership experience within the Republican party.
In 2012, Arcand was selected as the voting delegate for Michigan's First Congressional District at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. Duties of a voting delegate include nominating candidates for president and vice president.
Arcand noted that he has also served as a Republican delegate on the state and precinct levels.
