KINGSFORD - Joan "Jo" Walsh, 80, of Kingsford, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at Dickinson County Hospital in Iron Mountain.

Jo was born Sept. 22, 1933, in Depauw, Ind., daughter of the late Henry and Margaret (Sharp) Simon. She graduated from Southeastern High School in Detroit in June 1950. Shortly thereafter she met Richard "Dick" Walsh and they were married on Aug. 4, 1951. At that time Dick was in the service and they lived in Fort Bragg, N.C., until his discharge, when they returned to Detroit. During their life together, she and Dick lived in many different areas, including Detroit and Iron Mountain, Missouri, Ohio and Minnesota. Upon their retirement in 1998 they returned to Iron Mountain, where they have resided since.

At first Jo was a stay-at-home mom, but when she returned to the workforce she enjoyed a varied career. She worked for the American Red Cross, Michigan and Southwestern Bell Telephone Companies, Bob's Homes, Inc., Ted J. Fornetti Jr. DDS, Richard Celello, and finally as a legal secretary for 13 years at the law firm of Lommen, Nelson, Cole and Stageberg in Minneapolis.

Jo was a member of P.E.O. Chapter AN, Friends of the Library, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and a volunteer at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.

Jo is survived by her husband, Dick; daughters, Ann Walsh of Kingsford and Alison Walsh of Evanston, Ill.; son, Tom (Kathy) Walsh of Evanston, Ill.; son-in-law, Daniel Reale of Boston; sister, Alice (Bill) MacArthur of Clare; and niece, Diane (David) Leggett of Clare. She was also a loving grandmother to six grandchildren, Maxwell and Simon Reale; Mitchell and Katherine Weaver; and Madeline and Aidan Walsh.

In addition to her parents, Jo was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathryn Walsh (Reale).

Visitation will be Tuesday, Jan. 28, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. Memorial services will follow Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the church, officiated by Reverend Richard Riley.
