GILLETT, Wis. - Patrick Moreau and Adam Parent each scored 19 points as the banged up Niagara Badgers nipped Gillett 61-59 in overtime to close out the M&O Conference boys basketball regular season Saturday.
Niagara missed two scoring threats, with Zach Walker (sore ankle) ailing and Joey Swanson (eye) sitting out more than two quarters. Swanson returned for the overtime period.
"This was a great character win," Niagara Coach Jim Hoogland said. "Patrick Moreau and
Adam Parent had outstanding games. They were out there every second. That's hard to do."
Moreau and Parent each played 36 minutes - four quarters and the four-minute overtime.
Moreau tallied seven of Niagara's 15 steals and grabbed nine rebounds.
Niagara, down 26-24 at halftime, outscored Gillett 18-9 in the third quarter. The Tigers came back to tie with an 18-11 fourth quarter.
Parent hit a 15-foot jumper in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime.
Parent, Swanson, Moreau and Jacob Oratch accounted for Niagara's eight overtime points. The Badgers trailed early in overtime but an Oratch free throw closed the gap to one. A Moreau putback of a missed free throw gave Niagara a 60-59 lead. Parent added the final free throw.
The Badgers (8-14 overall, 6-10 M&O) begin WIAA Division 5 tourney play Tuesday at Florence.
