During a ceremony at the Iron Mountain Michigan State Police post on Thursday, troopers Michael Floriano, Kelsey Sipple, and Ryan Rossler received Lifesaving Awards from their assistant district commander for their roles in helping four-year-old Vincent Rose.
Vincent was running a 106 degree fever and had suffered from a seizure while playing at the park on July 14, 2013.
His father, Lee Rose, remembered the incident well.
"He was just playing, having fun, when he said he was cold and could he have a jacket," Lee recalled. "It was like 90 degrees out."
Lee went to check on his other children. When he turned back around, he saw that Vincent was face-down on the beach.
"He was blue, not breathing," he said. "We called for help right away."
As a member of the military, Lee is familiar with emergency situations. He tried to open Vincent's airway, but Floriano, Sipple, and Rossler quickly arrived on scene and took over.
The troopers believed that Vincent might be choking, so they administered back blows in an attempt to dislodge the obstruction. They were able to establish an airway, and Vincent began breathing again.
"Due to their knowledge of first aid, the child survived," said Inspector Stan Rogers, assistant district commander for the Michigan State Police's eighth district, who was on hand to present the awards.
Lifesaving Awards are bestowed upon members of the Michigan State Police who, through their direct actions, save a life.
Lee, Vincent, and the rest of their family were also present at the award ceremony.
