Four Seasons Animal Hospital employs veterinarian Dr. Cheryl Matuszewski and practice manager Kelly Devorak, both of the La Crosse, Wis. area.
The animal hospital, like the rest of the shelter, is also supported by volunteer work.
Four Seasons Animal Hospital opened on April 7, and business has been anything but slow.
"We are pleasantly surprised at how busy we have been," said Bonnie Jewell, shelter manager.
Jewell spoke highly of Matuszewski, who has been practicing as a veterinarian since 2000.
"I see how Cheryl handles and cares for the animals, and it's just incredible," she said.
Devorak noted that the clinic is already booked for surgeries through June.
"Everybody has been very kind, and very appreciative," she said. "Being able to offer these services in the area is huge."
Four Seasons Animal Hospital sees mostly dogs and cats, but has treated other kinds of pets, such as rabbits, on occasion.
Matuszewski said she most commonly sees dogs with vomiting and diarrhea issues or with back leg injuries, but that is not the limit of the animal hospital's service.
Available services include wellness exams, surgeries, vaccinations, blood and urine work, digital x-rays, ultrasounds, and dental work.
Matuszewski and Devorak have a goal to spay and neuter every patient before they leave the shelter.
In the past, spaying and neutering was a more difficult process, requiring a trip to another facility as far as Iron Mountain or Eagle River, Wis.
The clinic space was previously rented to veterinarian Robert Anderson of Iron River, who retired in February.
Talk of opening a new animal hospital at the shelter started late last year, and construction at the facility began in January.
On May 17, North Woods Animal Shelter will host an open house to celebrate the expansion. The public is invited to attend from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Four Seasons Animal Hospital is located at the north parking lot door of North Woods Animal Shelter. Appointments can be made by calling (906) 265-3111.
Both the shelter and animal hospital are non-profit organizations.
