BARK RIVER - The Michigan Education Association (MEA) has chosen Bill Lake, past superintendent of Bark River-Harris Schools and current board of trustees member at Bay College, with the Paul Blewett Award given for a lifetime commitment to education.

Blewett taught math for 43 years at Bark River-Harris High School, served as the Education Association president, and held numerous other positions within the MEA. Upon his untimely passing, his foundation endowed the MEA with funding to honor anyone whose career improved the lives of teachers, furthered the goals of the MEA, or furthered the cause of public education.

The award was announced in Lansing at the MEA's annual Representative Assembly by MEA President Steve Cook.

"Mr. Lake has worked as a tireless advocate for public education and has shared his exceptional knowledge of the legislative process and the often labyrinthine bureaucracy of the Department of Education to secure funding, scholarships, legislative support and grants that directly benefit and positively impact the lives of students and education in the Delta/Menominee County areas," Cook said quoting the nomination form.

Lake has served as a teacher, principal and superintendent of four school districts. Although retired, he has served on the Bay College Board of Trustees since 2003 and will run for another term in the November 2014 election.

Lake served on the Community Foundation Board for 14 years and held office as past president. He was nominated by Nanci Love of Bay College and Yvonne Mains from Bark River-Harris Schools, with supporting information from Bay College President, Dr. Laura Coleman, and guidance counselor, Jan Hood, from Bark River-Harris.

MEA President Steve Cook presented the award to Lake at a ceremony honoring him at Bark River-Harris Schools on May 18.
