CALUMET - Pastyfest 2014, Calumet's celebration of this areas unique contribution to the cuisine of the Upper Peninsula will be held on Friday, June 27 and Saturday, June 28.
The celebration begins on Friday evening, June 27 at 7 p.m. (Easterm time) with the presentation of the community service awards. These awards are presented annually to three individuals who have made a significant contribution to improving the quality of life in our community and the preservation of its rich cultural heritage.
In addition, the winner of the Pastyfest T-shirt design competition will be announced. The ceremony will be held at the Calumet Colosseum, 110 Red Jacket Road. The public is invited.
Saturday morning begins with a parade at 11 a.m. This year, any child wearing a costume with a Pastyfest theme will be rewarded with a special prize.
Immediately following the parade, more than 20 crafters and other vendors will be displaying their wares in Agassiz Park until 4 p.m.
There will also be several food vendors offering pasties as well as other food offerings. The pasty bake-off and judging will begin at 1 p.m. There will be games, face painting and other children's activities throughout the afternoon. And, as is tradition, there will be live music to enjoy.
This year, Pastyfest will end with a special celebration of th e 200th anniversary of the composition of the "Star Spangled Banner," the national anthem at the Calumet Theatre.
Arrive at the Theatre (340 Sixth Street) before 3:45 p.m. for a Mass singing of the national anthem at 4 p.m. Anyone attending will receive a free pasty, courtesy of Pasty Central, at the conclusion of the ceremony.
