KINGSFORD - Austin D. Lucas, a 2006 high school graduate, has been tapped for membership in Mortar Board, a prominent national honor society for college seniors.
Lucas is majoring in social work and sociology at Northern Michigan University, from which he plans to graduate in June 2015. In addition to his membership in Mortar Board, he is also involved in Phi Theta Kappa, Zero Gravity Outreach, Student Social Work Organization, NMU Wild Cat Archery, U.S. Collegiate Archery, National Field Archery Association (Professional), Michigan Field Archery Association and Upper Peninsula Field Archery Association.
Additional interests include art, graphic design, website development, four-wheeling, Christian outreach and volunteering.
He is the son of James and Valerie Lucas of Breitung Township.
Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Since its founding in 1918, the organization has grown from the four founding chapters to 230 chartered collegiate chapters with nearly a quarter of a million initiated members across the nation. The Telion chapter at Northern Michigan University was chartered in 1979.
Mortar Board provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community. Some notable Mortar Board members include former President Jimmy Carter, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
Tedd and Karen Marheine of Iron River, are excited to announce the graduation of their daughter, Dr. Tricia R. Marheine, from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, where she received a doctor of dental surgery degree in May of 2014.
She is a 2006 graduate of Kingsford High School and a 2009 graduate of Albion College.
Dr. Marheine and her fiance, Kyle Nelson, currently live in Albert Lea, Minn., where she has accepted a job as an associate dentist in an extraordinary local private practice, Advanced Family Dental"in Albert Lea, Minn.
Jenny Jarvis graduated from the University of Memphis with a master of science degree in biomedical engineering in May 2014.
She conducts research in the biosensor laboratory under the direction of Dr. Ern Lindner where she is currently working on an industrial project involving blood gas analyzers in critical care units.
Jenny received the Johan Gadolin Scholarship, which will allow her to conduct research at bo Akademi University in Turku, Finland this fall. Following her work abroad, she will return to the University of Memphis to continue her Ph.D. in biomedical engineering.
Jarvis is the daughter of Dale and Mary Jarvis of Niagara, Wis. She is a 2008 graduate of Niagara High School and graduated summa cum laude from Northern Michigan University in 2012 with a bachelors of science degree in ACS Certified Chemistry.
University officials have announced that more than 4,487 students received Academic Honors for the semester that ended December at Ferris State University and Kendall College of Art and Design.
To be eligible for Academic Honors, the minimum requirements for full-time students each term are 3.5 GPA and completion 12 of credit hours or more of graded course work at the 100 level of higher. The minimum requirements for part-time students each term are 3.5 GPA with completion of at least 12 accumulated credit hours of graded work at the 100 level or higher.

Some 1,009 students completed the requirements for certificates, associates, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at Ferris State University and Kendall College of Art and Design during the semester that ended in December.

Joshua Brodersen of Vulcan was named to the spring 2014 Dean's List at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn. Dean's List members have achieved a 3.75 grade point average or above on a 4.0 scale. Brodersen is majoring in Exercise Physiology.
Two local students have been named to the Dean's List for the spring 2014 semester at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis.
Iron Mountain - Neal Riutta, pursuing a bachelor of arts degree in economics;
Kingsford - Matthew Giordanelli, pursuing a bachelor of science degree in athletic training.
St. Cloud State University graduated more than 1,350 students during spring semester 2014. Commencement ceremonies took place May 10 at Halenbeck Hall.
Among them was Kevin Gravel of Kingsford, receiving a bachelor of science, finance, Magna Cum Laude.
Greenville College has released the names of students who qualified for honors at the conclusion of the spring semester. The list includes Jason Borntrager of Iron Mountain, a sophomore, worship arts major, who made Dean's List.
To qualify for the Dean's List, freshmen are required to maintain a 3.5 grade point average (4.0 scale). Sophomores, juniors and seniors must have a 3.7 GPA.
Amy Schiavo of Crystal Falls has graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. Schiavo earned a bachelor of science degree in Marketing.
She was one of about 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students who received their diplomas May 18, 2014 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee.
The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has named 2040 undergraduate students to its Deans' Lists for the 2014 spring semester. Local student included Chelsie Leslie of Niagara, Wis.
Chelsea Wender has been names to the Dean's List during the spring 2014 semester at Roosevelt University in Chicago.
This is a significant accomplishment students earn this distinction by achieving a GPA of 3.75 or better and in doing so performed in the top 15 percent of all students in the College last semester.
Chelsea is the daughter of Dale and Louise Wender and is a 2012 graduate of Kingsford High?School.
