IRON MOUNTAIN - Known as the "cocktail cruise," a leisurely ride on the local lakes and rivers is a lovely way to enjoy the sunset and see your neighbors - if only from a distance. If I had a boat, I would partake in this lovely, evening ritual of skirting the shoreline with one hand on a cocktail and the other in the air, waving to strangers and friends silhouetted against the brilliant, setting sun.
As it is, I observe from the other side. Like the other day, I joined my family on my sister's shore after a late afternoon swim. When the children were finally waterlogged and headed to the house, we adults just lounged on the dock and stared out at the lake. It was a peaceful time: the water skiers and zooming motorboats were finished for the day. But as the sun lowered, the pontoon boats left their piers and began their customary circuit around the lake. As they passed, we waved to each other, not in recognition of who we are (for it is virtually impossible to identify faces) but in acknowledgment of the beautiful summer evening.
Summer brings us all out-of-doors, even if it is to sit on the front porch and watch the cars go by. This was a frequent pastime where I grew up in the city. Yards were tiny, but the front steps provided a view of the streets and, therefore, a parade of people and cars. Our house was in an excellent spot for this recreation as it was located on a major boulevard near a corner stoplight. As cars slowed for the light, we could clearly see the people enjoying the summer air through open windows and convertible tops. We would often recognize those we knew, and the red light sometimes provided enough time for a brief albeit shouted conversation.
But part of the attraction of "step-sitting" in the summer was what was going on across the street. To the right was the bus stop, with its eclectic assortment of characters, day and night. But directly across from us was the school playground. And on summer nights, this was the setting for softball games. Chicago softball was an authentic and popular sport with a 16- (not 12!) inch ball. The large balls made a tremendous sound when hit with a heavy, wooden bat swung by one of the strong, young men who regularly assembled for these neighborhood games. A small gathering of fans assembled on the green park benches, but we had preferred seating on our own bleachersthe front steps of our house, where we always had the best view.
For it seemed that the whole world passed by our house in those days: kids on skates and bicycles, couples out for a stroll, cars cruising to the beach or hamburger stands, and the boys en route to their games they were all there, the whole parade, viewed from our front steps on those warm and wonderful summer nights.
