The cities of Iron Mountain and Kingsford are studying police and fire services to save money and improve efficiencies. Do you think the cities should combine forces, and create one police and fire department?

First, I would like to know what Iron Mountain does with the money they receive to run the city. They cut police & fire departments. Hire out private garbage pick-up and charge fines to home-owners that rent the homes out. I think they should be safe residences also, but, what do they do with the money? Kingsford Fire & Police are always going over to help Iron Mountain. Kingsford does not have to become part of the chaos that Iron Mountain has made for itself. Unless, of course, they would like to change their name to Kingsford!

As the poll question is written, it sounds like one public safety department, if edited to say one police and one fire department. Then I would vote yes. Firefighters should be fire/EMS and police stay police each is a different ball game, sometimes a conflict of interest. Especially when it comes to patient care. I'm gonna stop here before i get all riled up.

Let's have one police dept. one fire dept. one DPW. one city government. It's time to get serious about this.

Certainly this is not a reduction in cost, but perhaps an effort to improve operating effeciences for the community. Some times things happen out of necessity. Hopefully no one will be displaced. Hurray for having common sense.

For 40 years, amid insults, called a crackpot and assorted other reactions, I've said it should be Kings Mountain, Ironford, or maybe now even Bat Cave City; but whatever the name, it doesn't make sense having 2 of everything. When you look at the total geography within 10 miles of downtown Iron Mtn and the population therein, doesn't make sense to me to have 4 of everything. Just the saving on administration would make it worth doing.

Both cities should just combine in general. Being right on top of one another and not combining is ridiculous. Just call it Iron Mountain/Kingsford done.

Firecop - I think you are missing the point on this one. The poll is to combine the forces of the two cities. Thereby ending up with one police department and one fire department. Those who want to be firemen can be firemen and those who want to be policemen can be policemen. There is just no need to have two forces and so many. Some will lose their jobs, and that is too bad. We are over-staffed in this county.

I have worked full time in both fire and police departments prior to retiring. What people should consider is that to be a Police Officer in the state of Michigan you have to be MLEOTC (Michigan Law Enforcement Officer Training Council) certified. That means that you must complete a certified Police Academy. How many Fire Fighters are young enough to make it through? Can the Fire Department afford to have employees gone for four months of training at the Police Academy and pay the cost? A Fire Fighter needs to be trained in Fire Fighting I & II. Can the Police Department afford to to have police officers away at training? I can tell you from 32 years of experence that most Fire Fighters do not want to be Police Officers and most Police Officers do not want to fight fires. When you dial 911 don't you want someone to respond that want's to be doing this type of work (be it Police or Fire). Do you want someone who's heart is in their work or someone who was forced to do thi
