Boys Basketball: Elcho spills Patriots

GOODMAN, Wis. — Elcho nipped Goodman-Pembine 44-43 in a Northern Lakes Conference boys basketball opener Friday.

“We came out strong and battled all night in another back and forth game to start the season,” said Patriots coach John Swick. “Coach (Eric) Strzok has done a great job with a young group and both teams fought hard through a lot of foul trouble on both sides. The benches played a big part in this game and did a nice job of keeping it close.”

Evan Metras led the Patriots (0-2, 0-1 NLC) 10 points. Hagan Braaten had 8 points and 7 rebounds. Noah Suther added 7 points and 5 rebounds. Drew Morrison chipped in 6 points.

Caleb Nelson had a “solid night” with 9 rebounds, Swick noted.

Wyatt Marcy had 7 boards.

“For us it came down to missed open shots and free throws,” Swick said. “I am encouraged by our effort and I believe in these guys to make the adjustments we need to make.”

The Patriots face Laona-Wabeno on Tuesday at Pembine.
