Girls Basketball: Mid Peninsula beats North Central, 45-35

ST. NICHOLAS — The Mid Peninsula Wolverines adjusted their defense and received sterling play from three girls Tuesday in a 45-35 victory over North Central.

“We played for 32 minutes, good, smart under-control basketball,” Mid Pen coach Bobby Reichel said after the Skyline Central Conference girls basketball game.

Sarah Hanson scored 16 points “and had a lot of rebounds,” said Reichel.

Haley Trudell, whose suggestion to Reichel resulted in a defensive switch, scored 21 points. “We’ve been waiting for her to open up and break out. She had a good game,” said Reichel. “She hit some threes, she got to the rim and took advantage of some open lanes and got to the basket and made some layups and made some free throws.”

Reichel said the Wolverines needed a defensive adjustment and Trudell suggested trying man-to-man coverage.

“It brought a lot of early energy tonight,” he said.

“We created the turnovers, but they took a lot of quick shots, a lot of pressured shots. That helped set the tone for the game. A quick shot is the same as turnovers, as long as we get the rebound.”

The Wolverines also played some 2-3 zone but didn’t trap as much. Reichel said the man-to-man “was a little bit of a surprise because we hadn’t played it that much. It brought out some extra energy.”

He said the Jets played a straight-up physical man defense.

“They were bumping her quite a bit and the refs let them play,” Reichel said. “She’ll learn from it.”

Freshman Sierra Debelak led the Jets with 10 points.

Mid Pen hit 15-of-45 field goals and North Central made 15-of-48.

Mid Pen goes to Republic Friday while North Central visits Big Bay de Noc Friday.
