Girls Basketball: Norway rally sinks Wykons, 56-43

IRON RIVER — Sixteen unanswered points powered Norway past West Iron County 56-43 in non-conference action Friday at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.

WIC (1-1), triggered by a Riley Stine triple, moved out to a 7-3 lead in the first quarter. Norway (2-0) followed with 16 straight points — seven from the free throw line.

“We started off a little slow but then our press picked up,” said Knights coach Carli Kelly. “I’m pleased with our press. They had a lot of turnovers. It was a very fast-paced game, up and down.”

WIC had 35 turnovers, 20 in the second half.

Jordan Kraemer led the Knights with 17 points and nine rebounds. Teidra Fuson added 12 points, eight rebounds and several blocked shots. Haley Clifford had 10 points.

“We made some young mistakes and didn’t take care of the ball,” said Kelly, indicating 18 turnovers.

Emmy Kinner’s 14 points paced the Wykons, who trailed 32-22 at halftime. They closed to eight in the third quarter.

Britta Grayvold opened the fourth quarter with a trey to put Norway ahead by 11. The Knights held a 19-point cushion in the final quarter.

Norway hosts Kingsford on Monday. Kraemer, who topped 1,000 career points in last season’s district final, will be honored for her accomplishment prior to the game. West Iron visits Iron Mountain on Tuesday.
