IRON MOUNTAIN — Riley Poupore and Brianna Hoffman teamed up for late-game heroics in a 61-59 win against Gwinn on Thursday.

With the game tied 59-59, Poupore took a shot in the dying seconds and Hoffman scored a put-back as the buzzer sounded for the narrow Mid-Peninsula Conference win.

Poupore led the Mountaineers with 30 points. Hoffman was one of three players to score three points.

Brenna Bruce hit a triple to bring the Modeltowners within four points and a little more than four minutes to go.

Evans hit a free throw to cut the lead to three and McGuire hit a shot to chip Iron Mountain’s lead to a point with 1:24 left.

Iron Mountain’s turnover led to another triple by Bruce to give Gwinn a 59-57 lead with just over a minute left. Bruce missed the front end of a one-and-one bonus. Poupore hit a shot with 23 seconds left to tie the game. Gwinn failed to score on the ensuing possession, setting up the last-second miss by Poupore and the buzzer-beating score by Hoffman.

Foul trouble kept Gwinn in the game as the Mountaineers played a less physical defense and allowed the Modeltowners to hit 18 free throws (18 of 23) on the game.

All of Bruce’s 15 points came off 3-pointers.
