She recently concluded her first year as the Lakers’ assistant coach.

“I look forward to being a head coach, because I can have a positive influence on student-athletes and help them succeed both on and off the court,” said Newberry, adding that she’s eager to coach a team that competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Newberry has been involved with volleyball for most of her life. Michael’s mother Jeanne has coached volleyball coach at Iron Mountain High School for two decades.

“I enjoy the energy the sport brings,” Newberry said about volleyball. “So much excitement goes on when you are a part of watching a good play happen.”

In high school, Newberry was named to all-region and All-Mid-Peninsula Conference teams as a volleyball player.

“I look forward to coaching at Silver Lake College, because I believe I have a lot of knowledge that would help players reach their athletic potential and I hope to share the love of the game with them,” she said.

Newberry received her bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in counseling from Lake Superior State University, where she also was a standout student-athlete in track.

Iron Mountain’s Jordan Barbeau played last season for the Lakers, who finished with a 7-23 record.
