Boys Basketball: Badgers break losing streak

GILLETT, Wis. — Niagara broke out of a seven-game losing streak with a 57-37 M&O Conference win against Gillett on Friday.

The win was the Badgers’ first since Jan. 17 against Wausaukee.

Niagara (7-12, 4-11 M&O) was led by Jacob Bousley’s 14 points, while Alex Hagerty chipped in 12 points and grabbed 10 of the team’s 47 rebounds.

“We showed a lot of patience on offense as a team,” Niagara coach Jim Hoogland said. “Ethan (Blagec) struggled shooting but we were able to get balanced scoring. This is something for us to build on now going into the playoffs. We start playoffs in two weeks so we’ve got to start building some momentum.”

Hoogland said he wanted to see more patience out of the team. To get the players to be more patient, he told the players pre-game that they would be taken out of the game if they committed a turnover. Niagara committed 14 turnovers while Gillett had 22.

“We showed the best patience that we’ve shown all year,” Hoogland said.

Niagara carried a 23-18 lead into halftime. Hoogland said Gillett’s turnovers began to hurt them as the Badgers took control about five minutes into the second half.

“We got some shots and they turned the ball over and we were up by 12 at that point,” Hoogland said. “We looked like a basketball team. We were just sometimes pressing too much and tonight we relied on each other tonight. It was good basketball to watch.”

Gillett JV won 35-30.

Niagara hosts Peshtigo on Thursday in the regular season home finale.
