Boys Basketball: West Iron sinks Nordics, 58-40

IRON RIVER — West Iron County, behind Emmy Kinner’s 21 points and Colbi Laturi’s 16, held off North Dickinson 58-40 in non-conference basketball Wednesday.

The Wykons (6-14) carried a 30-13 lead into the second half but the Nordics (3-16) closed the gap to six in the third quarter.

“We came out flat in the third quarter,” said WIC coach Mike Dallavalle. “Our rebounding and our defense was a bit suspect and we allowed North Dickinson to get back into the game. And give them credit for coming out fighting.”

WIC started the final quarter with a 40-32 lead.

“Emmy and Colbi started driving hard to the basket and getting some fouls called so we could get in the bonus,” Dallavalle said of the fourth quarter. “We also moved the ball well offensively again getting some even distribution on scoring.”

Freshman Eden Golliher added eight points for WIC.

“Eden had a great night rebounding for us and we were able to pull away in the fourth for a nice victory,” Dallavalle said.

For Senior Night, the Wykons started seniors Kinner, McKenna Carlson, Allie Schive and Sydney Schram with junior Natalie Tomasoski.

“These girls kicked off the game with a solid 10-4 lead after one quarter,” Dallavalle said. “We moved the ball well against the zone and found Kinner with some open triples on the perimeter. “

The Wykons picked up the tempo in the second quarter.

Juliann Wickman led the Nordics with 17 points.

The Wykons host Iron Mountain at 7 p.m. March 1, to begin the Class C District 95 tournament. The Nordics complete the regular season tonight by hosting Carney-Nadeau.
