Girls Basketball: Westwood downs Iron Mountain, 44-35

ISHPEMING — The Westwood High School girls basketball team met one of their preseason goals on Monday night, defeating Iron Mountain 44-35 in Mid-Peninsula Conference play.

“We wanted to double the number of wins we had last year,” Patriots coach Kurt Corcoran said about improving from five wins a year ago to a 10-8 record with two games remaining in the regular season.

“It’s nice to see the girls playing well as we get to tournament time.”

Freshman point guard Madelyn Koski paved the way for the victory, scoring what Corcoran believed was her team’s first 14 points and finishing with a game-high 25.

“She got a couple fast-break steals and made a 3-pointer,” Corcoran said. “In fact, she had 17 of our 21 points in the first half.”

Averaging about 10 points per game, her coach said if Koski starts hot, she can carry it through most or all of a game.

Another freshman, guard Tessa Leece, was the only other Westwood player to score more than five points with nine. Senior teammate Lauren Farley didn’t score but did pull in a team-high five rebounds.

A 12-5 lead after one quarter became 21-11 at halftime and 30-16 by the end of the third quarter as the Pats evened their Mid-Peninsula Conference record at 5-5.

“We had it up to about 20 points in the third quarter, but (Iron Mountain’s) Emma Thomann plays tough.”

Thomann finished with 13 points while teammate Riley Poupore had 12.

The Mountaineers (5-13, 3-8) travel to Gwinn tonight.

Westwood, which also won the JV game 53-33, plays at undefeated Norway tonight before having to tangle with the Knights to open their Class C district tournament in Iron River on March 1.
