Girls Basketball: Wykons beat L’Anse, 65-51
IRON RIVER — Sophomore Colbi Laturi scored 15 of her game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter and West Iron County snapped a five-game losing streak with a 65-51 victory over L’Anse in West PAC basketball Monday.
The Wykons (5-14, 2-6) outscored the Hornets 30-20 in the fourth quarter.
“These girls played really well together tonight again and finally came out on top,” said WIC coach Mike Dallavalle. “We showed great discipline in the first quarter picking apart L’Anse’s zone and finding open shooters. Colbi had a great first quarter (with eight points).”
In the second quarter, Aly Pangrazzi went inside for six WIC points, putting the Wykons ahead 28-19 at halftime.
“We came out of the locker room from halftime flat both offensively and defensively,” said Dallavalle, noting the Hornets cut the lead to four points after three quarters. “We didn’t seem to be rebounding or fighting for loose balls in this quarter.
“Early in the fourth, all of sudden we were only up one and needed to take a timeout to regroup.”
Dallavalle cited Emmy Kinner for checking Bailey Froberg to nine points and Kat Serbentas for holding Taylor Brown to six.
“I think the girls coming off the bench tonight did a great job for us making some great passes and good defense,” Dallavalle said.
In the fourth quarter, Laturi knocked down three triples while 6-foot Rachel Tefft and 5-foot-10 Eden Golliher combined for eight points in the post.
Golliher finished with 13 points on the night.
“We closed out the game with a solid finish,” Dallavalle said. “I was really proud of how all of these girls stuck together to get over the hump tonight with a win.
“After playing so well last week with three long road trips and always being in those games right until the end but coming up short, they deserved a solid home win tonight and they earned it.”
The Wykons host North Dickinson in a make-up game Wednesday to complete the regular season.
