Hockey: Hancock breaks tie, beats Kingsford 6-1

HANCOCK — Hancock snapped a 1-1 tie with five goals in the third period and defeated Kingsford 6-1 to close out the high school hockey regular season Monday.

The shorthanded Flivvers (11-12-1) evened the score 1-1 in the second period on Daunte Fortner’s slap shot from the high slot. Alek Shanks had the assist.

Dawson Kero replaced Cam Murray in Hancock goal after Kingsford tied the score in the Great Lakes Conference game.

The state-ranked Bulldogs (16-8) took a 2-1 lead in the third period. They added another goal when a pair of penalties gave the Flivvers a 5-on-3 advantage but Alex Nordstrom scored an unassisted breakaway.

Two of the next three Hancock goals were on power plays.

Injuries and illness limited the Flivvers to 11 skaters.

“Halfway through the third period the team got exhausted,” said a team representative. “The final score did not tell the true story of the game.”

Kingsford goalie Trevor Anderson stopped 33 shots. The Flivvers had 21 shots on goal.

The Flivvers open the MHSAA Division 2 pre-regional Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Negaunee.
