Scuttle Leftovers, April 22, 2017

ScuttleBu(r)t …

The University of Minnesota football offices and player meeting rooms, under new coach PJ Fleck, have scented candles that are supposed to stimulate senses, according to Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Don’t remember any scented candles in the Norway football office of Bob Giannunzio, Pasty Anderson and Vic Fochesato …

From Dan Shaughnessy, Boston Globe: “MLB commissioner Rob Manfred should be concerned about an ESPN poll of more than 6,000 sports fans asking them to name their favorite pro athletes. The top 50 names on the list did not include a single active major leaguer.”

From Dwight Perry, Seattle Times, on 7-foot-1 Loek van Mil pitching for the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic: “Think he uses a windmill windup?”

Michigan State’s Tommy Izzo and Michigan’s John Beilein contacted Wisconsin Coach Greg Gard after the Badgers lost to Florida in overtime in the NCAA regional semifinals. Mike Lucas of uwbadgers.com figures Izzo and Beilein for 1,052 wins.

“They’ve been there, done that,” Gard said. “And if you’re in this long enough, you’re going to be on each side of that coin. They were both more reflective on the whole season. Coming from those two guys specifically, knowing how much experience and time they’ve put into this profession, it meant a lot to me. They’ve seen the good and the bad. They’ve lived this — like we are now.”

Not sure if I’ll continue to subscribe to the MHSAA video package of quarterfinal and semifinal state tournament basketball games. Could have been my computer, but the TV broadcast locked up repeatedly and trailed the radio call by several minutes.

From the Boston Globe’s Ty Burr, on Fox News dumping talking head Bill O’Reilly: “Fox will remain conservative, but it may become a kinder, gentler, and more polite conservatism (especially if they can get rid of Sean Hannity).”
