Winter bocce league deadlocked

NORWAY — There’s a tie for top honors in the 2017 Dickinson Area Bocce Association Winter Bocce League.

“In a unique occurrence, there has been a virtual tie for top honors for most of the season,” said a league spokesman.

Winter League plays on Sunday afternoons in the gymnasium of the Norway Covenant Church.

The five league teams are playing a double round-robin format. All teams play each other twice during the season and each team has two bye weeks over the course of league play.

Izzo’s and Woodlands Motel have been matching each other week by week since Feb. 19th. This past week, Izzo’s claimed two out of three games to hold the top place all by themselves with a 15-game win total for the season.

Izzo’s is comprised of captain Mike Izzo,Teddy Izzo, Tim Haagensen and Kevin Johnson.

Woodlands Motel, last years’ wire to wire champion, includes team captain Al Spigarelli, John Gaudette, Bob Langsford and Dave Antonetti.

With only two weeks left in the season, the Papa Lou’s team of Lysle Rugg, Dave Stark, Mike Massie and Joel Froze has a chance for second place.

Host Covenant Church is solidly in fourth place with returning players Sam and Spencer McCormick, Jim Danielson and Bruce Olson.

The fifth-place Newbies have Bill Morrison, Alicia Erickson, Jenia Butterfield and Jon Carpenter.

League play, open to the public, begins at 4 p.m. on the next two Sunday afternoons.
