LUXEMBURG, Wis. — Iron Mountain scrapped to a pair of draws Saturday in the Luxemburg-Casco Invitational girls soccer tournament.
The Mountaineers (8-3-2) tied Sheboygan Falls 1-1 and Luxemburg-Casco 3-3.
Riley Poupore had a goal and three assists and Brianna Hoffman added two goals and an assist. Reagan Lundholm was the other goal scorer.
“In each game we scored first but failed to hold on to the lead,” said Mountaineers coach Zack Frorenza. “Both teams had a lot of talent.
“From an organizational standpoint, these were the most impressive teams we’ve run up against. They moved the ball with a purpose, moved well without the ball and ran numerous set piece plays.”
The Mountaineers and LC played last year.
“We knew they would have a lot of talent returning knew and they’d be a lot to handle on the defensive end,” said Frorenza, noting the Spartans and Rhinelander were the only teams to score three goals on the Mountaineers last season. “However, since we also scored six goals in our victory against them last year we knew we could break them down if given the opportunity to counterattack on them. It was a really hard fought game that played out how we expected it to.”
Both teams had a lot of chances in the back-and-forth game.
“Each goalie made big saves and Lauren Lesky had a huge game in net for us,” Frorenza said. “She hasn’t had to win many games for us this year like she did last year, but she stepped up big on a few occasions to preserve the draw for us in this one.”
Luxemburg-Casco’s losses on the year have come to Green Bay Preble (over 2,100 students) and five-time defending WIAA Division 3 state champion Catholic Memorial.
“It would been really nice to get a win in that one, but it’s still a quality result that shows where our program is at against quality opponents in Wisconsin,” Frorenza said.
The Mountaineers visit Northland Pine on Tuesday.
