EAGLE RIVER — Riley Poupore scored three goals and Iron Mountain downed Northland Pines 3-1 in non-conference high school girls soccer Tuesday.

The first Poupore goal came less than four minutes into the game.

“Riley was able to head in a perfectly played corner kick by Brianna Hoffman,” said Mountaineers coach Zack Frorenza.

Minutes later, Poupore added to the lead on a “superb shot from distance into the upper corner of the net,” Frorenza said.

The sophomore scored her third goal after making a run up the right side of the field.

“She was able to run by a few defenders on her way up the side of the field and towards the goal (for a 3-0 lead),” Frorenza said.

The coach was impressed with the way his Mountaineers started the game.

“We jumped all over them and played our game from the start,” Frorenza said. “I was glad we didn’t come out flat due to it being a late-season, non-conference game.

“The focus on the task at hand was impressive when you think about all the things the girls have going on at the end of the year.”

The Mountaineers (9-3-2, 2-3), who still have a shot at second place in the UP Soccer Conference, close out the season Thursday in Houghton.

“We are moving the ball around the field much better now, not getting stuck on one side of the field or the other, and it shows in the increase in goal scoring and quality chances now compared to the beginning of the season,” Frorenza said.
