Ironwood Polar Bears coach Aaron Bender felt like a winner after his team lost to Ludington West Shore in the PeeWee state hockey tournament finals at Iron Mountain’s Mountain View Arena.

“I was paid with tremendous heart, passion and toughness,” Bender said to his players.

Bender has coached a variety of sports for some 25 years including high school baseball and college volleyball.

“They’ve come a long way in a couple months,” Bender told The Daily Globe. “”I scream, I holler and I get upset, but tonight I shed tears.

“I cry because my daughter and 17 of my adopted children had to be on the losing side of a fantastic youth hockey game. I am so proud of all of them.”

Mark Wells, a member of the USA’s famous “Miracle on Ice” team at Lake Placid, attended the tournament. Wells delivered a pep talk to the local team during his appearance.

Wells was headed to Lake Placid following the tournament for a “Miracle on Ice” fantasy camp. Price tag was $6,495 …
