Tennis: Kingsford beats Marquette, ties Miners

MARQUETTE — Kingsford boys tennis team left Marquette County Monday with a win and a tie.

The Flivvers (3-0-1) handled Marquette 7-1 and battled Negaunee to a 4-4 draw.

Number one singles Alec Olivier had the lone Marquette point, beating Alek Shanks 6-0, 6-1.

“Olivier is the premier player in the UP,” Kingsford Coach Mark Shanks said. “Alek had some good points but Olivier is just too consistent.”

In the match with Negaunee, Shanks outlasted Eric Hurst 6-7 (7-5), 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 1 singles.

“Extremely close with Negaunee but what’s new,” said the Flivvers coach, who estimates 10 ties with the Miners during his coaching career. “It was a good day for the kids to play to play two.”

The Flivvers had two wins on the day from No. 1 doubles Daunte Fortner and Tyler Beauchamp.

Kingsford hosts Escanaba today.

Wykons over Maroons

IRON RIVER — West Iron County, in a tune-up for Wednesday’s match with unbeaten Kingsford, turned back Menominee 5-3 at Nelson Field Courts on Monday.

A revised WIC doubles lineup with one starter missing accounted for three points. WIC No. 1 Brandon Henschel-Kevin Ballinger downed Levi Kempka-Austin Hansen 6-1, 6-1.

“Our one doubles dominated from start to finish,” said WIC Coach Joe Serbentas. “That’s the most complete match they’ve played all year. The top three doubes all played excellent.”

WIC had Seth Miatech-Steven Nelson at No. 2 doubles and Dante Thurston-Christian Benson at No. 3 doubles.

The Wykons host Kingsford on Wednesday and compete in the Kingsford Invitational on Saturday.

“This Kingsford team is pretty tough,” Serbentas said.
