Legion baseball: Blagec, Niagara Legion beat Osseo 4-0

CLINTONVILLE, Wis. — Niagara, behind the three-hit pitching of Ethan Blagec, blanked Osseo 4-0 in the American Legion Class A state baseball tournament Thursday.

Niagara (21-7), playing in the elimination bracket after losing to Clintonville on Wednesday, faces defending state champion Waupun (20-3) at 12:30 p.m. today. Niagara manager Dale Blagec said Waupun has won two other state titles in recent years.

“We’re playing good defense and pitching well,” Blagec said. “That’s what’s holding us in.”

Ethan Blagec struck out six and walked none. Hunter Kaldor finished up the game in the seventh inning.

Niagara had six hits with no walks or strikeouts.

“Pretty good pitchers’ game,” manager Blagec noted.

Niagara’s initial run came in the first inning, with Micah Wilson hit with the first pitch of the game.

“(Second batter) Joe Murvich smoked one to right center,” said Blagec, sending Wilson to third base.

A Hunter Kaldor sacrifice fly brought in Wilson.

Niagara added three runs in the third inning. Seth Polfus reached base on an error and Landen Kaldor followed with a single. Justin Bal singled home both runners for a 3-0 cushion. Hunter Kaldor singled home the fourth run.

ALSO: The Gladstone Indians secured the American Legion zone tournament title last weekend with a 16-8 win over the Copper Country Flames in Hancock.

Gladstone finished unbeaten in the tournament. The Flames defeated the Menominee Red Waves 6-4 for second place.

Gladstone, Copper Country and Menominee all advanced to the state tournament in Gladwin.
