Legion baseball: Niagara falls to Clintonville in Class A tourney

Faces Osseo in elimination bracket

CLINTONVILLE, Wis. — Clintonville, fueled by a six-run fifth inning, defeated Niagara 10-4 Wednesday to open the American Legion Class A state baseball tournament.

Niagara, which had downed Clintonville twice in the regional tournament, will play an elimination bracket game at 12:30 this afternoon against Osseo.

“One little hiccup (in the fifth),” said Niagara coach Dale Blagec. “We’ll be back.”

Clintonville capitalized on three Trey Doda walks to score three runs in the first inning.

“Tight strike zone the entire game,” Blagec said.

Niagara tied the score with three runs in the second inning. Kevin Evosevich walked and Nate Krueger singled to set up Seth Polfus’ two-run double. Micah Wilson added a run-scoring, two-out single.

Hunter Kaldor walked and came around to score for a 4-3 Niagara lead in the third inning. Clintonville answered with a run in the bottom half.

Evosevich and Wilson each had two of Niagara’s eight hits.
