NEGAUNEE — Defending UP champion Negaunee downed West Iron County 7-1 in girls tennis Friday.

Katarina Serbentas defeated Megan Syrjala 6-1, 6-1 for the lone Wykon point.

Wykons coach Joe Serbentas said the Miners return 11 of 12 players from last year’s title team.

“Negaunee is the clear favorite in the UP,” Serbentas said. “They’re the class of the UP but I thought we played well.”

The Wykons, 1-1, competes today in the Kingsford Invitational.

“Negaunee is a very fundamental team,” Serbentas said. “They’re just tough.”

Negaunee’s two wins this season have come against Westwood, which shared the U.P. Division 2 title last fall with Munising, and the Wykons, who finished just two points shy of the co-champs at the D2 finals.

“West Iron is really athletic, so it was good to have to work and finish long points,” Miners coach Kyle Saari said.
