KINGSFORD — Kingsford clicked in most facets of the game in sinking Sault Ste. Marie 35-0 last week.

The Flivvers (2-1) are looking to extend that success Friday, hosting Wausau East (1-4) at 7 p.m. Friday.

“I thought we played good football,” said Flivvers coach Chris Hofer. “We’re just trying to get better every week. I think we’re on that pace.”

Flivvers quarterback Sawyer Perpich strafed the Blue Devils for 299 yards passing and four touchdowns. The defense yielded just 168 yards.

However, the Kingsford rushing attack continues to seek a breakout game. The Flivvers had 53 yards rushing against the Blue Devils.

“We had a lot of big plays in that game,” Hofer said. “That took care a lot of that (rushing concern) but you still have to be able to do it.”

Perpich, Chase Kreski and Luke Terrian earned Flivver of the Week honors from the coaching staff. Guard Joe Sturm was the top blocker.

Jordon Jones and Jack Zimmerman each made eight tackles and Trevor Povolo added seven to lead the Flivvers. Jones, according to the Flivvers defensive points system, tallied 15, followed by Zimmerman, 13; Terrian, 11, and Nate Rutter, 10.

Wausau East, independent of a conference, broke a 19-game losing streak this season by beating Southern Door 17-14.

“They’re better than their record shows,” Hofer said. “They’ve played some good teams like Merrill and Wisconsin Rapids.”

Wisconsin Rapids rolled over the Lumberjacks 62-7 last week.

“You watch that game and wonder how it became 62-7,” Hofer said. “They’ve got some weapons. They give you a lot to defend.”

In other area games Friday, West Iron County (3-1, 2-0) travels to Houghton (0-4, 0-3) for a West PAC test.

The Gremlins suited up just 14 players last week, holding a 6-0 lead on Calumet before giving up 22 points in the fourth period.

“I couldn’t be more proud,” Gremlins coach Frank Bonacorsi said. “Those 14 kids played their butts off. They were ready for it all week, and they played hard all the way against a very good team tonight.”

Norway (4-0, 0-0), after four non-conference home games to start the season, visits Bark River-Harris (3-1, 0-1) for its Mid-Eastern Conference opener.

The Broncos traveled six hours last week to beat Hiawatha of Kirkland, Ill., 38-14.

Bark River relied on big plays and three interceptions.

“We made big plays and that was the difference in the game,” said Bark River-Harris coach Al Stenberg.

Broncos quarterback Ben Schultz ran for a touchdown and threw two TD strikes. Ryan Arndt carried 10 times for 77 yards and one TD, while also catching a pair of touchdown passes.
