NMU’s Mayon runs for 219 yards in loss to Tiffin

TIFFIN, Ohio — Northern Michigan, despite the third 200-yard rushing game of the season for Jake Mayon, fell to Tiffin University 35-24 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference football.

Mayon, a junior from Plainfield, Ill., finished with 219 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns.

Northern Michigan will look to bounce back Saturday against Saginaw Valley State University at the Superior Dome.

ASHLAND, Ohio — The Huskies fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter of the GLIAC football game.

“Ashland definitely outplayed us today, they executed well, converted on third downs, did all the little things they need to do to keep drives moving, and played really well on defense,” Michigan Tech Coach Steve Olson said.

Former West Iron County standout Max Maloney recorded three tackles, one tackle for a loss, and two quarterback hurries for MTU.

Ashland improved to 6-1 overall and 5-0 GLIAC.

Michigan Tech (3-4, 2-3 GLIAC) hosts Wayne State on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (Eastern time)

MSU 30, Minnesota 27

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — L.J. Scott returned from an injury to rush for a career-high 194 yards and two touchdowns , helping Michigan State to the road win after the start of the game was delayed 34 minutes by lightning strikes.

The Spartans (5-1, 3-0 Big Ten) maintained their momentum from their victory over Michigan.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — (AP) — Karan Higdon ran 25 yards for a touchdown on the first play of overtime for No. 17 Michigan and Tyree Kinnel intercepted a fourth-down pass in the end zone on the final play.

Higdon finished with 200 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries, providing most of the offense for Michigan (5-1, 1-1 Big Ten) on another day when the Wolverines struggled to sustain drives.

Wisconsin 17, Purdue 9

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Jonathan Taylor ran for 219 yards on 30 carries, including a 67-yard touchdown, and the No. 7 Badgers relied on its stifling defense to overcome a three-turnover afternoon.

Alex Hornibrook was 13 of 18 for 199 yards and a score but threw two interceptions for the Badgers (6-0, 3-0), who held on to beat another division foe and take a commanding lead in the Big Ten West.

Toledo 30, CMU 10

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Terry Swanson ran for two touchdowns and a career-high 177 yards for the Rockets (5-1, 2-0 Mid-American Conference).

Central Michigan (3-4, 1-2) scored late in the fourth when Morris connected with Tyler Conklin from 26 yards.
