Basketball: Florence girls start season today

FLORENCE, Wis. — Florence, under new coach Dave Bauer, hopes to move up in the Northern Lakes Conference girls basketball standings.

The young Bobcats are coming off a season with just one win in the conference.

“For this season I would hope to be closer to the top of the conference,” said Bauer, assisted by Brad Perry. “But we have Crandon, Three Lakes, Goodman Pembine and, possibly, Laona/Wabeno in there also. So we will have to work hard to accomplish our goal.”

Bauer noted that Goodman-Pembine “started coming around last year.”

Brier Winney and Selena Burkart graduated from last year’s squad (3-18 overall).

“This year’s team should be quicker,” Bauer said. “We should be more balanced with more scoring.”

Florence also stands “a little bigger defensively, so that should help.”

Cassie Larson, Chloe Peterson, Sidnie Steber and Savannah Vassar are back from last year’s varsity.

Florence hosts Crivitz of the M&O Conference tonight in the first game of the year. The Bobcats also host Coleman on Nov. 28 before the first NLC game Dec. 1 at Phelps.

“The girls are working hard every practice and, hopefully, we are ready for the season opener.

This year’s roster:

SENIOR — Alicia Gehlhoff

JUNIORS — Cassie Larson, Savannah Vassar, Chloe Peterson, Sidnie Steber

SOPHOMORES — Jordyn Springer, Jenna Springer, Kathleen Selden, Haley Behrmann
