Boys basketball: Foul trouble dooms Niagara in loss
WAUSAUKEE, Wis. — Foul trouble and turnovers doomed Niagara in a 46-34 loss in its M&O Conference opener against Wausaukee on Tuesday.
The Badgers (2-1, 0-1) made 29 turnovers and committed 24 fouls in the loss. Three Niagara players fouled out.
Niagara shot 12 of 49 for the game.
“We had way too many turnovers. Twenty-nine is way, way too many, especially when you shoot that poor,” Niagara head coach Jim Hoogland said. “We also got out-rebounded. Of their 49 rebounds, 24 were offensive. We need to play with more intensity and take care of the basketball.”
Alex Hagerty led the Badgers with 12 points. Ben Oratch had nine of Niagara’s 39 rebounds.
Matt Delfosse had a game-high 16 points for Wausaukee. The Rangers had 49 rebounds.
The Badgers jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start, but Wausaukee’s fullcourt pressure created turnovers. The Rangers went on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good.
Wausaukee took a 19-13 halftime lead.
Niagara cut the lead to four in a strong showing to start the second half, Hoogland said. Then, fouls caught up to the Badgers. Alex Hagerty fouled out with about eight minutes left. Austin Hagerty and Ben Oratch fouled out soon after.
“We played pretty well the first six minutes of the second half,” Hoogland said. “Our foul trouble caught up to us. We got down by double digits. In a low scoring game that’s a lot.”
Niagara JV won, 32-13.
