Boys basketball: Niagara sinks Goodman-Pembine, 55-43
GOODMAN, Wis. — The Niagara Badgers bounced Goodman-Pembine 55-43 in non-conference action on Thursday.
Austin Hagerty had a game-high 19 points for Niagara (2-0).
The Badgers held a 29-20 halftime lead.
“We played really good first half. We played pretty well,” Niagara head coach Jim Hoogland said. “Came out and played really well first five minutes of the second half and were up by 16.”
The Patriots (1-1) kept chipping away at Niagara’s lead and cut it to eight points with about four minutes left in the second half.
“In the second half we started to hit a few shots and had opportunities to close the gap but went cold again late and never recovered,” Goodman-Pembine coach John Swick said. “I was proud of my guys for never giving up and keeping their poise in a difficult game.”
The Badgers hit a stretch of free throws to hold momentum and maintain the lead, but finished the game 6 of 17. They also were 24 of 55 from the field.
Niagara grabbed 43 rebounds including a team-leading 10 from Ben Oratch.
“We came out from the start playing very slow,” Swick said. “Our rebounding discipline was not there. It was a very physical game and we never matched their intensity.”
Both teams combined for 37 fouls — 16 by Niagara and 21 by Goodman-Pembine. Niagara’s Hagerty fouled out and Goodman-Pembine’s Wyatt Marcy fouled out.
“They were a big win for us because they were a region team,” Hoogland said. “When it comes to seeding in February, that’s going to be important. My guys worked extremely hard. We just need to make a better job of taking care of the basketball.”
Goodman-Pembine shot 19 of 62 and had 38 rebounds.
Niagara opens M&O Conference play at Wausaukee on Tuesday night.
Goodman-Pembine plays at Elcho today.
Niagara JV won 50-26.
